Lower Paleolithic

history Maturity 11-13 Next article →

The Lower Paleolithic was the first part of the Old Stone Age. It began a very long time ago.

Early people made the first stone tools. Some tools were found in Kenya. They are 3.3 million years old. Later, a group called Homo habilis used simple tools. They used them to cut meat. They also used them to break bones for marrow.

Climate changes in Africa made the land dry. Forests turned into grassy plains. This forced people to find new food.

Next, Homo erectus appeared. They moved from scavenging to hunting. They lived in large groups. They also moved out of Africa to live in Eurasia.

Later, a new group called Homo heidelbergensis appeared. They may have used early language. They also made better stone axes.
