The Lion-man is a very special piece of art from a long time ago. It is a sculpture that shows a human body with the head of a cave lion.

This kind of art is called zoomorphic because it mixes animal and human features. People find this object amazing because it is one of the oldest statues ever found. It belongs to a group of people called the Aurignacian culture. Experts believe it was made between 35,000 and 41,000 years ago. This shows that very early humans had deep ways to express their ideas.

Making this statue was a very hard job that took a lot of time. An artist had to carve it out of mammoth ivory, which is a large tooth.

They used sharp tools made of flint stone to do the work. They used a tool called a scraper to shape the body. They also used a tool called a burin to make fine details. It is estimated that the basic shaping took about 200 hours. In total, making a replica of this piece might take more than 370 hours. The artist had to work very carefully against the grain of the ivory.

History shows that finding the Lion-man was not easy. It was discovered in 1939 by a geologist named Otto Völzing. He found it in a German cave called Hohlenstein-Stadel.

Because a war started right after, the small pieces were left in the dirt for many years. Later, an archaeologist named Joachim Hahn began to put more than 200 fragments together. Other experts like Elisabeth Schmid and Ute Wolf helped fix and rebuild it. In 2012, a new restoration helped the statue grow from 296 to 311 millimetres tall.

There are many interesting facts about where the Lion-man lived. It was found in a cave that is part of a special place in Germany. This place is called the Swabian Jura UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The statue was found in a chamber near the cave entrance. Other things were found there too, like bone tools and jewelry made of animal teeth. Some researchers even argue about whether the figure is a man or a woman. This debate continues because it is hard to be sure about the old carving. It is now kept safely in the Museum Ulm in Germany.

Scientists think the Lion-man tells us about how early people thought. They might have used it for special rituals or ceremonies.

It shows a connection to the vital forces of nature. This idea is similar to other old art, like cave paintings in France. Those paintings also show creatures that are part human and part animal. Just like the Lion-man, those figures help us understand the stories early people told. It reminds us that humans have always loved to create and wonder about the world.
