An artist can make a small figure or a large decoration. They might use a knife in one hand. Some use a chisel with two hands. Others use a mallet to hit the chisel. This work can result in a beautiful sculpture. It can also be used to decorate objects. People use this skill to make many things. It is a way to turn a plain piece of wood into something amazing.

To start, a carver must choose the right wood.

They look for a piece that is the right size. Hardwoods are tough but they last a long time. Softer woods are easier to shape. The carver must pay close attention to the grain. The grain is the direction the wood grows. It is smart to carve with the grain. If you carve against it, the wood might break.

This is why carvers are so careful.

First, the carver shapes the wood using a gouge. A gouge is a tool with a curved blade. It helps remove large bits of wood smoothly. For harder wood, they might use a mallet. Next, they add fine details. They might use a v-tool to make thin lines. A veiner can make deep grooves.

Some people even use a chainsaw for huge projects. Finally, they finish the surface. They might use rasps or sandpaper to make it smooth. Some carvers like to leave tool marks to give the art life.

Wood carving has a very long history.

The oldest piece is the Shigir Idol. It was carved from larch wood. It is about 12,000 years old! Many important sculptures in China and Japan are made of wood. Most sculptures from Africa and Oceania are wood too. In Europe, many carvings from the Middle Ages are still around. In England, people often used oak in the 16th and 17th centuries. Wood is harder to keep than stone because of fire or insects.

Once the carving is done, the artist protects it. They might use natural oils like walnut or linseed oil. This helps keep out dirt and moisture. It also gives the wood a nice sheen. Some artists use wax for a soft shine. They avoid very shiny varnish. This is because too much shine can hide the shape of the art. This is sometimes called the toffee apple effect. By using these steps, carvers make art that lasts and looks beautiful.
