Artists use tools like knives or chisels. Some use a mallet to hit the tool. Others use a big chainsaw for large pieces.

Wood is light and easy to cut. This makes it great for masks. People can also carve fine details into it.

Carvers must look at the grain. The grain is the direction the wood grows. It is best to carve with the grain. If you carve against it, the wood might break.

Carvers use a gouge to shape the wood. A gouge is a tool with a curved blade. They might also use a v-tool for thin lines.

Different woods work well for different jobs. Basswood is easy to use. Hardwoods like oak last a long time.

To finish the art, carvers may use oil or wax. This protects the wood from dirt. It also gives the art a soft shine. The oldest carved wood is the Shigir Idol. It is 12,000 years old!
