You use tools to shape a solid object. You do this by scraping bits of the material away. The material must be hard enough to hold a shape. It must also be soft enough to scrape.

This is different from using clay. Clay is soft and easy to shape. Carving takes much more work than using clay. People use many things for carving. Some use wood or stone. Stone is very strong. It can make art last a long time. This is why people in Ancient Egypt used stone. You can carve many other things too. Some people carve ice to make ice sculptures. Others carve soap, bone, or ivory. You can even carve fruit or vegetables. There is even a way to carve banana stalks. This is called Thaeng yuak. People also carve gourds. Some artists even carve small coins. These are called hobo nickels. Carving is a special skill. It turns a solid block into something new.
