Relief

arts Maturity 11-13 Next article →

Relief is a special way to make art. In this style, the sculpted shapes stay attached to a solid background. The word comes from a Latin verb that means "to raise." When an artist makes a relief, they create the look of shapes rising from a flat surface.

This method is very useful for big projects. It is safer than making a free-standing statue. A standing statue can be fragile at the ankles. A relief is more securely fixed to its wall or base. It also makes it easier to show many people in a big, busy scene.

Artists use different steps to create these works. If they work with stone or wood, they must chisel away the background. This can take a long time. This process makes the uncarved parts look higher than the rest.

For other materials, the way is different. Artists can use clay, metal, plaster, or even paper-mâché. In these cases, they simply add material to the background to make it rise up. For large metal reliefs, they use a method called casting. Many old reliefs were also painted to help the shapes stand out.

People have used relief for thousands of years. Ancient Egyptians used a style called sunk relief. This is different because the shapes are cut into the surface instead of rising out.

In the Ancient Near East, people carved rock reliefs into cliffs. Many cultures in Buddhist countries also made these stone carvings.

During the Renaissance, artists like Donatello perfected shallow-relief, which is a very slight carving. This era saw a big revival of these classical styles in Europe.

There are several types of relief based on how much they stick out. High relief, or alto-rilievo, shows more than half of the shape's depth. Sometimes, parts like a head or arm are almost completely detached from the back.

Low relief, or bas-relief, is much flatter. You can see this on small items like Roman coins.

There is also mid-relief, which is common in Hindu and Buddhist art. This type is often used to tell sacred stories on temple walls.

Relief connects to many things we see in the world today. You might see low relief on a coin in your pocket. You can see high relief on grand buildings or monuments. Some reliefs are used to tell long stories through many panels. For example, the Borobudur temple has 1,460 panels that tell the Jataka tales.

Whether it is a small carving or a huge wall, relief helps us see stories in three dimensions.
