Donatello was a famous Italian sculptor from the Renaissance period.

He was born in Florence around the year 1386. His father, Niccolò di Betto Bardi, worked as a wool-stretcher. Donatello studied classical sculpture to create a new style. This style helped start the Early Renaissance in art. He was known as an amiable and well-liked man.

He even kept a bucket of money hanging from his ceiling. His assistants could take money from it if they needed help.

Donatello was a master of many different materials. He worked with stone, bronze, wood, clay, stucco, and wax. He was also very inventive with the use of glass.

He often made large statues that people could walk around. These are called statues executed in the round. He also created shallow carvings called bas-reliefs. Some of these were for large pulpits or altars. Others were small Madonna and Child figures for homes. He often worked with a small team of skilled assistants.

His career began with many important learning steps. In 1401, he was about 15 years old. He befriended the artist Filippo Brunelleschi during this time. The two men traveled to Rome to study ancient ruins.

They measured old buildings and studied ancient art. Donatello later worked as an apprentice for Lorenzo Ghiberti. He helped work on the famous bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery. This training helped him become a great master of sculpture.

Donatello received many important jobs from powerful people. The Medici family was a major patron of his work.

One of his most famous pieces is the bronze David. This was the first freestanding nude male sculpture since antiquity. He also carved a huge statue of Saint John the Evangelist. This large figure sat in a niche on the cathedral façade. He worked in many cities like Rome, Padua, and Siena. These trips helped spread his new techniques across Italy.

His art changed and grew as he got older. At first, his statues were very large and grand. Later, his work showed more energy and charm.

He could make very strong and even brutal pieces. Some of his bronze works had small mistakes from casting. For example, his David has a hole under his chin. Despite this, his skill is easy for experts to see. He died on December 13, 1466, in modest circumstances. Many say he was very happy in his old age.
