He lived during the 1300s and did many important things. He started his career as a goldsmith. This means he learned to work with gold first. Later, he became an apprentice to Mino di Giovanni. He worked with his teacher on sculptures in Pisa. Eventually, the artist Giotto had a big effect on his style. Pisano helped move art away from the old Byzantine style. This change helped make modern art what it is today.

One of his most famous jobs involved metalwork.

He made the first of three bronze doors for the Baptistery in Florence. He worked on this big project from 1330 to 1336. The doors have many small quatrefoil panels. Some panels show single figures called the Virtues. Other panels show stories from the life of John the Baptist. These bronze doors came before the ones made by Lorenzo Ghiberti. They remain a very important part of the building's history.

Pisano was also a master at carving stone.

In 1340, he became the Master of the Works for the Florence Cathedral. This was a very high position for an artist. He made many marble sculptures during his time in Florence. He also made carvings for a large bell tower called a campanile. These carvings were in a double band of panels. They showed things like the Four Great Prophets. They also showed the Seven Planets and the Seven Virtues.

His work continued in other famous places too.

In 1347, he became the Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral. This cathedral had already been started by Lorenzo Maitani. The doors and the cathedral are his only surviving works there. Pisano had two sons named Nino and Tommaso. Both of his sons followed in his footsteps. They both eventually became Masters of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral as well.

Many other artists learned from Pisano during his life.

One famous apprentice was Andrea di Cione. Most people know him better by the name Andrea Orcagna. Another student was Giovanni di Balduccio. Giovanni made a special shrine in Milan called the shrine of Sant'Eustorgio. A writer named Giorgio Vasari even wrote a biography about Pisano. This helps us remember the many things this talented man achieved. He died in the year 1348.
