Andrea Pisano was a famous Italian artist.
Andrea is well known for his bronze doors. He made the first set of doors for the Baptistery in Florence. He worked on them from 1330 to 1336. The doors have many small panels. Some panels show single figures of the Virtues. Other panels show stories from the life of John the Baptist.
He also worked with marble. In 1340, he became the Master of the Works for the Florence Cathedral. He made carvings for a tall bell tower. These carvings show the Seven Virtues and the Seven Planets. He also carved the Seven Sacraments and the Seven Works of Mercy.
In 1347, he became the Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral. His two sons, Nino and Tommaso, both became masters there too. Andrea helped move art away from the old Byzantine style. He died in 1348.
Andrea Pisano was a famous Italian sculptor and architect.
One of his most famous jobs involved metalwork.
Pisano was also a master at carving stone.
His work continued in other famous places too.
Many other artists learned from Pisano during his life.
Andrea Pisano was a highly influential Italian sculptor and architect.
His journey into art began with the craft of a goldsmith. He learned how to work with precious metals and fine details. Around the year 1300, he became an apprentice to Mino di Giovanni. During this time, he worked on sculptures for Santa Maria della Spina in Pisa. Later, the famous artist Giotto became a major influence on his artistic style. This influence is visible in many of the marble works he created in Florence. His training allowed him to master both delicate metalwork and large stone structures.
One of his most significant achievements involved bronze metalwork.
Pisano also held very prestigious leadership positions in Italy. In 1340, he succeeded Giotto as the Master of the Works for the Florence Cathedral. This role meant he was in charge of major construction and artistic projects. While at the cathedral, he produced several important marble sculptures. He also created a double band of panel-reliefs for the great campanile, which is a bell tower. These reliefs featured many different subjects. They included the Four Great Prophets and the Seven Virtues. They also showed the Seven Sacraments, the Seven Works of Mercy, and the Seven Planets.
His career continued to grow as he moved to different locations. In 1347, Pisano became the Master of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral. This cathedral had already been designed and started by Lorenzo Maitani. Currently, the doors and the cathedral itself are the only surviving works of Pisano from his time there. His ability to manage such massive projects shows his skill as an architect. He was able to transition from the fine details of a goldsmith to the large scale of a cathedral builder.
Pisano's influence extended to the next generation of artists through his apprentices. One of his most famous students was Andrea di Cione. This artist is more commonly known by the name Andrea Orcagna. Another apprentice was Giovanni di Balduccio. Giovanni is known for executing the shrine of Sant'Eustorgio in Milan. Even the history of his own family is tied to his profession. Pisano had two sons named Nino and Tommaso. Both sons eventually followed his path and became Masters of the Works at Orvieto Cathedral.
We know much about his life because of historical records. The writer Giorgio Vasari included a biography of Andrea Pisano in his famous book, *Lives*. This record helps historians understand his impact on the art world. Pisano died in 1348, leaving behind a legacy of structural and sculptural innovation. His work helped bridge the gap between old traditions and new ways of seeing the world. Through his doors, reliefs, and sculptures, he changed how artists approached form and subject matter.
