He was a key figure in the art world of Florence. Ghiberti is best known for making two sets of bronze doors. These doors decorate the Florence Baptistery, a special church building. One set of doors was so beautiful that Michelangelo called them the "Gates of Paradise." Ghiberti was also a talented writer. He wrote a book called *Commentarii*. This book is very important because it is one of the earliest autobiographies by an artist. It helps us understand how artists lived and worked.

Lorenzo learned his craft through hard work and training.

He began as an apprentice to a goldsmith named Bartolo di Michele. Bartolo was Lorenzo's stepfather and a very popular maker of gold objects. Through this training, Lorenzo learned the first rules of design. He did not just work with metal, though. He also studied painting with an artist named Gherardo Starnina. Later, while working in Rimini, he helped finish paintings on castle walls. This helped him grow his love for painting.

His big break came during a famous competition in 1401.

The governors of the Baptistery wanted a master to make new bronze doors. Lorenzo was only 21 years old when he won this contest. He beat a runner-up named Brunelleschi to get the job. To finish his work, he set up a large workshop. Many famous artists trained there, such as Donatello and Paolo Uccello. He first made twenty-eight panels for the first set of doors. These panels showed scenes from the New Testament.

After his first success, Ghiberti received a second big job.

He was asked to make another set of doors for a different doorway. This time, he used a much more natural style. He used perspective to make the scenes look real and deep. This second set had ten large rectangular panels.

Each panel tells a different story from the Old Testament. For example, one panel shows the story of Adam and Eve. Another panel shows the story of Noah and his Ark. These doors are considered a major monument of the Renaissance.

Ghiberti's work changed how people saw art forever. His style was much more detailed and lifelike than what came before. The "Gates of Paradise" show how artists began to use light and space. Even though he lived a long time ago, his skill is still famous. People still look at his bronze doors to see his amazing talent. His life shows how a young apprentice can become a master. He left behind a legacy that shaped the history of art in Italy.
