This sculpture was much more than just a piece of art. For the people of Florence, it became a symbol of their strength. It represented the defense of their liberties against more powerful neighbors.

Because of this, the statue held great meaning for the city.

Michelangelo had a special way of working with stone. He believed the finished figure was already inside the marble block. His job was to carve away the extra stone to set the figure free.

He started by making sketches and small models of wax or clay. Then, he used a heavy, pointed tool called a subbia to shape the main mass. He also used a tool called a gradina, which is a chisel with teeth. To make the pupils of the eyes, he used a bow drill called a trapano.

The story of this marble block began long before Michelangelo touched it. A group called the Operai del Duomo wanted to make twelve statues of prophets. They originally planned to put them high up on the Florence Cathedral. In 1464, an artist named Agostino began working on this specific block. However, his work stopped and the stone was left outside for many years.

The large piece of marble was called "il gigante," which means "the giant." It was very expensive and hard to move to the city.

In 1501, the 26-year-old Michelangelo won the job to finish the giant.

He worked in a space behind the cathedral for a monthly salary. The marble came from a quarry in Carrara and traveled by ox-carts and barges. The finished statue weighs about 8.5 tons.

It was finally unveiled in a public square on 8 September 1504. A guard even had to protect it from other artists who were jealous.

Today, you can see the real David in the Galleria dell'Accademia in Florence.

A replica stands in the public square where it was first shown. Many other artists, like Donatello and Verrocchio, had made Davids before him.
