To make this statue, Michelangelo used a sharp iron chisel. He carved the marble to look like soft, flowing hair and strong muscles. The beard is especially amazing because it looks thick and curly. Some people say the hair looks so soft it was made with a brush.

Moses is shown sitting in a very serious way. His right hand protects the stone tablets of the Commandments. His left hand rests in his lap while holding his long beard. This pose shows both strength and a moment of quiet thought.

Pope Julius II asked Michelangelo to create this statue in 1505. The Pope wanted it for his own tomb. The project was very large and changed over time. Originally, the design included over 40 different statues. The statue of Moses would have been placed on a tier 3.74 meters high. It took many years to finish the work. The sculpture was finally completed in 1545, long after the Pope died in 1513.

There are many interesting facts about how Moses looks. He has two horns on his head.

This comes from a Latin translation of the Bible called the Vulgate. The Latin word used for his face could be read as "horned." Some scholars think this was a translation error. Others believe it was a common way to show his special status. The statue remains a centerpiece of the church in Rome today.

Many famous thinkers have studied this sculpture to understand its meaning. A man named Sigmund Freud spent three weeks studying it in 1913. He thought the statue showed Moses trying to control his anger. He believed Moses was staying still to protect the stone tablets. Other people think the face shows the awe of seeing God. Even today, the statue's vitality makes it a popular subject for study. It continues to make people wonder about the mind of the artist.
