It is found in four books of the Pentateuch. These books are Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy. The story describes how the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt. It follows their journey to a place called the Promised Land. This journey was led by a man named Moses. The narrative is a central part of Jewish faith and life.

Many things happen in this long story. It begins when a new Pharaoh enslaves the Israelites. He makes them build cities like Pithom and Rameses. Moses is chosen by God to lead the people to freedom. God sends several plagues to Egypt to show His power. These include turning the Nile into blood and sending frogs. In the final plague, the firstborn of Egypt are killed. After this, the Pharaoh finally lets the people leave.

During their desert travels, God provides food called manna. The Israelites also go to Mount Sinai. There, they receive the Ten Commandments and a special agreement. This agreement is called a covenant. It says God will protect them if they follow His laws. This period of wandering in the wilderness lasts for forty years.

Scholars study this story to understand history. Most modern scholars believe the Exodus is a founding myth. This means it is a story that helps a culture understand itself. They think the Israelites emerged in the highlands of Canaan. This happened around the time of the Late Bronze Age collapse. Some experts say the story might have some historical basis. However, they believe it is different from the actual history. They often date the writing of these books to the 5th century BCE.

This story connects to many different beliefs and groups. In Judaism, the Passover festival celebrates the Exodus. Early Christians also saw the story as a sign of salvation. The Quran also tells the story of Moses as a major prophet. Even in recent times, the story has inspired people seeking freedom. Groups like African Americans have used it to talk about civil rights. It remains a powerful story about hope and law.
