Julius Wellhausen was a famous German scholar. He spent his life studying very old books and ideas. He was interested in the Bible and the history of Islam. His work helped people understand how ancient texts were made. Many scholars still look at his research today. He was a very busy thinker who wrote many different books.

Wellhausen is most famous for a big idea. This idea is called the documentary hypothesis. He studied the first five books of the Bible, which are called the Torah. He believed these books were not written by just one person. Instead, he thought they came from four different texts. These texts were joined together long after the time of Moses. His theory became the main way scholars studied the Torah for most of the 1900s.

Wellhausen had a very long and busy career. He was born in Hamelin in 1844. His father was a Protestant pastor named Clements. Wellhausen studied at the University of Göttingen. He became a teacher there in 1870. Later, he worked at the University of Greifswald in 1872. He even resigned from that job in 1882 because of his own beliefs.

He worked at many different places in Germany. He was a professor at the University of Halle. Then, he became a professor at Marburg in 1885. In 1892, he moved back to Göttingen. He stayed there until he died in 1918. He wrote a very famous book called Prolegomena zur Geschichte Israels. He also wrote a celebrated book about the Arab kingdom.

His work connects many different subjects together. He studied the Old Testament and the New Testament. He also studied Islamic history and Arabic languages. One of his important books was about the Umayyad history. He even wrote about the Pharisees and the Sadducees. His research helped connect the study of religion with the study of history. This helped people see how old traditions grew over time.
