He was born in Tréguier in Brittany, France. His family was involved in fishing. He went to a religious school in his hometown. There, priests taught him subjects like math and Latin. Later, he moved to Paris to study more. He found that learning was much bigger than he first thought.

He spent many years studying how languages work.

He used these facts to understand history better. In 1847, he won the Volney prize for his writing. This prize was given by the Academy of Inscriptions.

He wrote this book in 1863. He started writing it after his sister, Henriette, died. The book was very popular but also caused many arguments. He wrote about Jesus as a real person in history. He did not say Jesus was a god. This idea made many Christians very angry at the time.

His ideas also included views on race and nations.

He wrote about how people form national identities. He also shared ideas about different human races that are now known to be false. For example, he shared a theory about the Khazar people that was later debunked. Later in life, a war with Germany changed how he saw the world. He watched how big changes in a country can change a person's heart.
