He believed this force was part of living matter. Most other scientists at the time had different explanations for this. He also supported a theory called "World Ice Theory." This idea claimed that most objects in space are covered in ice.

Chamberlain had a life that moved between many different countries. He was born in Hampshire, England, in 1855. His mother died when he was very young. Because he was often sick, he traveled to warm places like Italy. He attended a school in England called Cheltenham College. He did not like this school very much. He felt lonely and preferred looking at the stars. Later, he lived in France and Switzerland. He eventually became a citizen of Germany in 1916.

Music played a huge role in his life and choices. In 1878, he heard the music of Richard Wagner. This changed how he felt about different cultures. He began to love German culture very much. He also became a huge fan of French culture for a time. He moved to Dresden to be closer to German music. In 1908, he married Eva von Bülow. She was the biological daughter of the composer Richard Wagner. This marriage helped connect him even more to German traditions.

His writings eventually led to very serious political changes. His most famous book was published in 1899. It was a large work with two volumes. This book became very popular with certain groups in Germany. These groups were known as the Völkisch movements. In the early 1920s, Chamberlain met Adolf Hitler. He gave Hitler encouragement during that time. Because of this, some people call him "Hitler's John the Baptist."
