Oswald Spengler was a German thinker who studied many different subjects. He was a polymath, which means he was an expert in many areas. He looked at history, math, science, and art. He was also very interested in philosophy. Spengler wanted to understand how all these different things worked together. He spent much of his life trying to find patterns in human history.

He is most famous for his two-volume book called *The Decline of the West*. This work was published in 1918 and 1922. In this book, he shared a special theory about how history works. He believed that human cultures and civilizations are like living things. Just like plants or animals, he thought they have a life cycle. He believed every civilization has a limited and predictable lifespan. This idea is often called his organic theory of history.

Spengler was born on May 29, 1880, in Blankenburg. He grew up in the German Empire. His father was named Bernhard Spengler. His mother was named Pauline Spengler. As a young student, he studied Greek, Latin, and math at a school called a Gymnasium. He loved poetry, drama, and music. Later, he attended several universities, including Munich and Berlin. He earned his PhD from the University of Halle in 1904.

His books became very famous and caused many debates. In Germany, many people found comfort in his ideas during hard economic times. However, many academics did not agree with his methods. The sociologist Max Weber called him a learned dilettante. The philosopher Karl Popper thought his ideas were pointless. Even though people argued, his work was translated into many languages. In 1931, he wrote another book called *Man and Technics*. This book warned that industrialism and new technology could be dangerous to culture.

Spengler had complicated relationships with the politics of his time. He was a German nationalist, but he did not like the Nazi party. He disagreed with their ideas about race and antisemitism. This caused him to be ignored by the Nazi regime. In his final years, he lived in Munich. He spent his time reading Shakespeare and collecting ancient weapons from India and Persia. He died of a heart attack on May 8, 1936. He was 55 years old.
