Spencer believed that one main idea could explain the whole world. He called this idea evolution. He thought evolution was a way that things grow and develop over time. This did not just apply to animals or plants. He believed evolution also applied to the human mind and to human culture. He even thought it applied to how societies work together. He wanted to find natural laws for everything in the universe.

Spencer was born in Derby, England, on April 27, 1820. His father, George, was a religious man who taught him about science. His uncle, Thomas, helped him learn math, physics, and some Latin. Spencer was mostly an autodidact, which means he taught himself most of what he knew. He spent a lot of time reading and talking with friends. He even worked as a civil engineer during the railway boom.

He also began a huge project called the System of Synthetic Philosophy. This project was meant to be ten volumes long. It actually took him forty years to finish his work.

As he grew older, Spencer's life changed in many ways. He became more worried about his health and often felt lonely. His political views also changed from radical ideas to more conservative ones. However, he always stayed against war and imperialism. He even invented a tool to hold papers together. This was an early version of the modern paper clip.
