He was born in Paris in 1925. His family lived in Prague, a city he thought was stunningly beautiful. However, his life changed when he was thirteen years old. The rise of Adolf Hitler in Germany made his family leave. They moved to a place called St Albans in England. This move was part of a long journey for his family. He grew up in a new land but always remembered his home.

As a young man, Gellner went to Balliol College at Oxford.

He studied philosophy, politics, and economics. He even served in a military unit during a big war. After the war, he finished his degree with very high marks. He earned a special prize called the John Locke prize. He started his career as a teacher in Edinburgh in 1947. Later, he moved to the London School of Economics in 1949. He spent many years teaching and sharing his big ideas.

Gellner wrote many books that changed how people think. His first big book was called Words and Things. It came out in 1959 and was about language. This book caused a lot of big arguments among other thinkers. Some people even refused to review his work because they disagreed. He also studied how people live in different cultures. He looked at many different places like Morocco and Russia. He wanted to understand how the whole world works together.

One of his most important ideas was about nationalism. He wrote a famous book about this in 1983.

He believed nationalism became a necessity in the modern world. He thought that in modern times, people need to learn the same skills. This helps them work together in big industries. He said that a nation and its government should match. This idea helped explain why countries act the way they do. It was a new way to look at history.

Gellner was a very busy and active teacher. He taught at the University of Cambridge for eight years. He even led a special center in Prague later in life. Students loved him because he was a great speaker. He often spent extra time helping them learn. He also enjoyed playing chess and drinking beer with his students.
