The Genesis creation narrative is a famous story about how the world began.

This story is found in the first two chapters of the Book of Genesis. Many people in the Jewish and Christian faiths hold these words as sacred. However, modern scholars see it as a complex work made of different parts. They believe it is a composite of two main stories. These stories express different views about the nature of God and the world.

The first account is known as the Priestly source, or the P source. This part of the story likely comes from the 6th century BC. In this version, God is called Elohim. He creates the heavens and the Earth in six days. He does this simply by issuing commands for things to exist.

After six days of work, God rests on the seventh day. He blesses and sanctifies this day, which is the origin of the Sabbath. The story uses a repetitive pattern of commands and fulfillment.

The second account comes from an older source called the Jahwist source, or the J source. Scholars date this part to the 10th or 9th century BC. In this story, the creator is called Yahweh. Instead of just speaking, God forms the first man, Adam, from the dust.

Adam is placed in the Garden of Eden to care for the animals. Later, a woman named Eve is made from Adam's rib to be his companion. This story focuses more on humans and their relationship with the land.

History shows that these two stories were eventually joined together. Some scholars believe the first major draft of the Torah was written in the 7th or 6th century BC. There is a theory that the Persian Empire helped bring these texts together. After the Persians took Babylon in 538 BC, they allowed local groups more freedom. This might have encouraged different groups to create one shared legal code.

This process helped form the text we recognize today.

These stories also show links to much older ideas from Mesopotamia. The Genesis narrative shares themes with the Babylonian myth called Enuma Elish.

Both stories describe bringing order to a world that was once a chaotic ocean. However, the Genesis story is unique in its focus on monotheism. While Mesopotamian myths often featured many gods who fought, Genesis describes one all-powerful God. This belief system shows a world made with purpose and care for living things.
