The word Torah comes from a Hebrew root meaning to guide or teach. Many people call it "instruction" or "teaching" instead of just "law." It is made up of five books. These are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Some scholars call this group the Pentateuch. This name comes from Greek words meaning "five scrolls." In Jewish tradition, it is also called the Five Books of Moses.

These five books tell many famous stories. Genesis tells how God created the world. It also tells how the people of Israel began. Exodus describes how the Israelites left slavery in Egypt. They followed a leader named Moses to Mount Sinai.

Leviticus gives rules for how to use the Tabernacle. Numbers gets its name from two censuses of the people. Finally, Deuteronomy is the fifth book. These books work together to form one big story.

Many people have different ideas about how the Torah began. Rabbinic tradition says God gave these teachings to Moses. Some stories say they were given at Mount Sinai. Other stories say they were given at the Tabernacle.

Some thinkers believe the Torah was a blueprint for the world. They think it existed even before the world was made. Biblical scholars look at the text in different ways. They study how the books were put together over time.

History shows that the Torah has many different forms. A Torah scroll is a special way to write it. A scribe, called a sofer, writes the words in Hebrew.

In a synagogue, people read from these scrolls. They often use a pointer called a yad. This helps them follow the words without touching the ink. Some people also use a bound book called a Chumash. This book often has extra notes called commentaries.

The Torah is important to many different groups of people. It is a sacred text for Jewish life.

In Islam, the books are called the Tawrāh. Muslims believe God gave this teaching to many prophets. It is a major part of many different faiths.
