The Book of Psalms is a famous collection of Hebrew religious hymns.

In the Jewish and Western Christian traditions, this collection contains 150 different songs. Many people also call this book the Psalter. The Hebrew name for the book means it contains many praises and requests to God. The English name comes from a Greek word that means the words used with music.

The book is organized into five main sections. Each of these sections ends with a special hymn of praise called a doxology.

There are many different kinds of songs found within these pages. Some are hymns that praise God for creating the world or for His history. Other songs are called laments, which are ways to express sadness. Some laments are for a single person, while communal laments are for a whole nation facing a disaster.

There are also royal psalms that deal with kings and their ceremonies. You can even find wisdom psalms and songs for people on a long journey called pilgrimage psalms. Some songs are even used to say thanks after someone is helped during a hard time.

History tells us that these songs were written over a very long period. Some were written as early as the 10th century BCE. Others were written later, after the period known as the exile.

Many of the songs have names attached to them. While many people link them to King David, modern scholars see this as a way to connect the writing to famous figures. Other names mentioned include Asaph, Solomon, and the sons of Korah. Some versions of the book also include extra songs, like the Psalms of Solomon.

Learning about the songs involves looking at many small details. Many of the 150 psalms have titles or musical directions at the top. These might tell a leader to use stringed instruments or follow a certain melody.

The way we number the songs can actually change depending on the tradition. The Hebrew numbering is often different from the Greek numbering used in some Christian churches. This happened because of how people copied the books or used them in worship over many years. Even the number of verses in a song can change between different versions.

Most of these songs likely came from the southern kingdom of Judah. They were closely tied to the Temple in Jerusalem.

It is possible that these songs served as scripts for worship inside the Temple. Some songs mention things like incense or festive processions near the altar. This suggests they were part of a living tradition of music and prayer. Today, these ancient songs still connect people to the history of faith and music.
