It tells the story of how the Israelites left slavery in Egypt. This story is known as the Exodus. Many people believe God chose the Israelites as his people. He helped them escape through his power. This book helps explain who the Israelites are as a group. It shows their memories of hardship and their escape to freedom.

The story begins 400 years after Joseph joined his family in Egypt. A new Pharaoh becomes king and fears the growing number of Israelites. He makes them work very hard as slaves. A woman named Jochebed saves her baby, Moses, by putting him in a basket on the Nile River.

Pharaoh's daughter finds him and raises him as her own. Later, Moses sees an Egyptian hurting a Hebrew slave. After Moses kills the Egyptian, he flees to a place called Midian. There, he meets God in a burning bush. God tells Moses to go back to Egypt to free the people.

To free the Israelites, God sends ten plagues upon Egypt. These include things like a river of blood and many frogs.

The tenth plague causes the death of the firstborn sons in Egypt. This leads the Pharaoh to finally let the people go. As the Israelites leave, Pharaoh changes his mind and chases them. God parts the Red Sea so the people can walk through it.

After they pass, the sea closes and the chasing army is lost.

The Israelites travel to Mount Sinai.

God appears on the mountain with thunder and lightning. Moses goes up the mountain to receive the Ten Commandments. These are special laws for the people to follow. God also gives instructions for a Tabernacle. This is a special tent where God will dwell with his people. While Moses is away, some people worship a golden calf.

Moses eventually returns with stone tablets containing God's words.

People have different ideas about how this book was made. Tradition says Moses wrote it himself. However, many modern scholars believe it was written much later. They think it was put together between the 5th and 4th centuries BC. Some scholars believe the writing began during the Babylonian exile in the 6th century BCE.

Archaeologists like Israel Finkelstein and Neil Asher Silberman look for physical evidence in the Sinai. They note that excavations have not found proof of a large group wandering the desert. Still, many scholars believe the story has a historical core at its center.
