The Torah is a central collection of religious teachings and laws.

The term comes from a Hebrew root meaning "to guide" or "to teach." While many people call it "law," the word actually refers to instruction or doctrine. It consists of the first five books of the Hebrew Bible. These books are Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Scholars often call this collection the Pentateuch. This name comes from the Greek word for "five scrolls." In many traditions, it is also known as the Five Books of Moses.

There are different ways the Torah is physically presented. For religious services, it is written as a Torah scroll, or Sefer Torah. A scribe called a sofer writes the Hebrew words by hand.

In a synagogue, people read from these scrolls during communal worship. They often use a pointer called a yad to follow the text. This prevents the reader from touching the sacred ink. Another form is the Chumash, which is a bound book. These books often include rabbinic commentaries to help people study the text.

Rabbinic tradition views the Torah through two different lenses. The Written Torah refers to the five specific books. The Oral Torah consists of interpretations and amplifications. According to tradition, these oral teachings were passed down through generations. They are now found in works like the Talmud and the Midrash.

Many believe God gave all these teachings to Moses. Some parts were given at Mount Sinai. Other parts were given at the Tabernacle. Some even believe the Torah was a blueprint used for the creation of the world.

Modern scholars study how the Torah was composed over time. Most researchers see the Torah as a single literary unity. They believe it was largely completed during the Persian period. Some scholars suggest there were later additions during the Hellenistic period.

For example, one passage in Numbers might allude to battles involving Alexander the Great. Other researchers look at specific numbers in the genealogies of Genesis. These numbers help build the chronology of the text. While the substance seems older, these minor elements show how the text evolved.

Each of the five books covers a distinct part of history. Genesis begins with the creation of the world. It describes the history of the people of Israel and their ancestors. Exodus tells the story of the Israelites leaving slavery in Egypt. It describes their journey through the wilderness to Mount Sinai.

Leviticus focuses on instructions for the Tabernacle. It includes rules for sacrifices and moral laws. Numbers takes its name from two censuses of the Israelites. Finally, Deuteronomy provides further instructions before the people enter the Promised Land.

The Torah holds deep significance for many different religious groups. It is the foundation of Jewish communal life. In some synagogues, a Torah portion is read on Mondays and Thursdays. On Saturdays, parts are also read publicly.

The text is also sacred to other faiths. The Samaritans use the Samaritan Pentateuch in their own script.

In Islam, the text is called the Tawrāh. Muslims believe God gave this book to the prophets of the Children of Israel. It remains a vital part of the history of many religions.

Understanding the Torah requires looking at its many names and roles. It has been called "The Book of Moses" and "The Book of the Torah." These titles appear in various ancient books like Joshua and Nehemiah. Some early names were even more descriptive, like "The Book of the Torah of God." Whether viewed as a historical document or a divine blueprint, the Torah connects many different ideas. It links ancient history, law, and the study of faith into one system. This study is often called Talmud Torah, meaning the study of Torah.
