The Book of Genesis is a foundational text in world history. It serves as the first book of the Hebrew Bible and the Christian Old Testament.

The name "Genesis" comes from the Greek word for "origin." In Hebrew, the book is titled by its first word, which means "In the beginning."

This text is part of the Torah, which includes the first five books of the Bible. It explores the beginnings of the universe, the human race, and the Jewish people. While it contains religious meaning, it also serves as a complex literary work.

The book is divided into two distinct structural parts. The first part is the primeval history, covering chapters 1 through 11. This section focuses on the nature of the deity and humanity's relationship with a creator. It includes stories of creation and a great flood.

The second part is the ancestral history, covering chapters 12 through 50. This section tells the prehistory of Israel. It follows the lives of specific individuals through many generations. The narrative is often marked by the phrase "these are the generations," which signals a transition to a new subject.

Within the primeval history, there are two different creation narratives. The first describes God, referred to as Elohim, creating the heavens and the earth in six stages or "days." The second narrative describes the creation of Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden.

This section also includes the story of Noah. In this account, God decides to destroy his creation because humanity has corrupted the world with sin. He spares only Noah and his family to re-establish the relationship between humans and God. These stories set the theological themes for the rest of the book.

The ancestral history focuses on three main patriarchs: Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. The story begins with Abraham journeying from Ur of the Chaldeans to the land of Canaan.

His son Isaac and grandson Jacob also dwell in this land. Jacob's name is eventually changed to Israel. The history continues through Jacob's son, Joseph, whose actions lead the children of Israel into Egypt. This group eventually grows to 70 people and their households. The book concludes with Israel in Egypt, preparing for the upcoming Exodus.

Religious tradition often credits Moses as the author of the Pentateuch. However, modern scholars have different views on how the book was composed. During the Enlightenment, thinkers like Baruch Spinoza and Thomas Hobbes questioned this traditional authorship. By the 19th century, many scholars adopted the documentary hypothesis. This theory suggests that four different sources—J, E, D, and P—were combined by editors.

Scholars identify these sources by looking at different names for God and repeated stories.

The documentary hypothesis provides specific dates for these sources. The Yahwist source (J) may have been produced in the 9th century BCE. The Elohist source (E) likely came from the 8th century BCE. The Deuteronomist source (D) is associated with the 7th century BCE. The Priestly source (P) is considered the latest, possibly from the 5th century BCE in Babylon.

Because of this, the book reached its final form after the Babylonian Exile. Some modern scholars suggest even later dates for its final composition.

There are several theories regarding why the book was compiled. One controversial idea is the theory of Persian imperial authorization. This suggests the Persian Empire may have encouraged a single law code to manage local autonomy. Another view is that the book belongs to the "antiquities" genre. This genre uses genealogies and legends to connect families to a heroic past.

By using these stories, the authors could unite different groups within Israel. They used these narratives to explain their origins and their special relationship with God.
