Many people know it from the Book of Genesis in the Bible. It is also mentioned in the book of Ezekiel. Some call it the Terrestrial Paradise or the Garden of God. This place is seen as a sacred and perfect home. It represents a beautiful world where life began. The name Eden might come from a word meaning pleasure.

In the Bible, the story of the garden follows a specific path. God created a man named Adam and placed him in the garden. Later, God made a woman named Eve to be his companion. They could eat from almost any tree in the lush garden. However, they were not allowed to eat from one specific tree. This was the tree of the knowledge of good and evil. A serpent later convinced them to eat the forbidden fruit.

Because they ate the fruit, Adam and Eve had to leave. This event is often called the expulsion from paradise. To keep them from returning, God placed guards at the east side. These guards were cherubim and a flaming sword. The sword turned every way to protect the tree of life. This story explains why humans live in the world we see today. It is a very important part of many religious traditions.

Finding the exact location of Eden is a huge mystery.

The Bible says four rivers flowed from the garden. These rivers were the Pishon, the Gihon, the Tigris, and the Euphrates. Some people think Eden was in Mesopotamia or near the Persian Gulf. Others suggest it was in Armenia or the mountains of Lebanon. Even the historian Josephus thought the Gihon was the Nile river. Different scholars have many different ideas about where these rivers were.

Many other ancient cultures had stories about beautiful, perfect gardens.

The Sumerians spoke of a place called Dilmun. In Greek myths, there was a garden called the Hesperides. Some scholars think the Eden story shares roots with Canaanite myths. These older stories also talk about gods and sacred trees. Even the word "paradise" comes from ancient words for a walled garden. This shows how much people have always wondered about perfect places.
