Many different religions call him a prophet. A prophet is a person who shares messages from God with others. The Book of Ezekiel is named after him. This book tells the story of his life and his many visions. These visions were special sights that helped him understand God's messages.

Ezekiel's life involved many important and difficult events. He lived during a time called the Babylonian captivity. This happened when the Neo-Babylonian Empire conquered the city of Jerusalem. The empire destroyed Solomon's Temple and sent many people away from their homes. Ezekiel lived with these people near the Kebar Canal in a place called Tel Abib. He lived there with his wife, though the text does not mention any children. He spoke about the hard times the people were facing. He also told them that they would one day return to the Land of Israel.

Historians and religious scholars look closely at when Ezekiel lived. The text says his first big encounter with God happened in his "thirtieth year." Some people think this means he was thirty years old. Others think it refers to a specific year in history. One idea is that it was the year 593 BC. His last recorded message was in April 571 BC. This means his work as a prophet lasted for about 22 years. He likely died around 570 BC, many years before the Persian empire conquered Babylon in 539 BC.

Different faiths have their own special ways of remembering Ezekiel. In Christian tradition, he is remembered as a saint.

Some thinkers use his words to talk about other important religious figures. In Islamic tradition, he is also recognized as a prophet. Some scholars believe he is the same person as a prophet named Dhu al-Kifl. This name means "Possessor of the Double." There are even stories about how he was born to very old parents. These stories show how much people value his life and his mission.

People have traveled long distances to visit places linked to him. One famous site is Ezekiel's Tomb in al-Kifl, Iraq.
