Elisha began his journey as a student of the prophet Elijah. One day, Elijah found Elisha ploughing a field with twelve yokes of oxen. Elijah threw his mantle, which is a type of cloak, over Elisha's shoulders. This act showed that Elisha was the new leader. Elisha asked for a "double portion" of Elijah's spirit. Some thinkers believe this meant he wanted to be the rightful heir. Others believe he wanted even more power than his teacher.

One of his most well-known miracles involved a man named Naaman. Naaman was a military commander from Syria who had leprosy, a skin disease. Elisha told him to wash in the River Jordan seven times. After doing this, Naaman's skin was restored to be healthy again. This event is even mentioned in the New Testament of the Bible. Elisha also helped many people during times of famine and war.
