Isaiah was an important prophet in Israel during the 8th century BC.

His name means "Yahweh is salvation." He is the person the Book of Isaiah is named after. Many people wonder how this famous book was actually written. One traditional view is that one man wrote all 66 chapters. This might have happened in two parts between 740 BC and 686 BC. Other thinkers believe the book grew over a much longer time. They suggest parts were written during the time of King Josiah. Other parts might come from a group of prophets living much later.

Isaiah lived a life filled with many family connections. Some traditions say his wife was a prophetess like Deborah or Huldah. They had two sons with very special names. The older son was named Shear-Jashub, which means "A remnant shall return." The younger son was named Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz, meaning "Quickly to spoils, plunder speedily." Jewish tradition also mentions a son named Immanuel.

Christians often see this name as a prophecy about the birth of Jesus. Some ancient stories even say Isaiah was the grandfather of King Manasseh.

His life took place during times of great tension and war. He served during the reigns of several kings of Judah. These included kings named Uzziah, Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah.

One major event involved the powerful Assyrian army. The king of Assyria, Sennacherib, led his troops into Judah. This caused great fear for King Hezekiah. Isaiah encouraged the king to stay brave and resist the invaders. One account says an angel of God helped protect Jerusalem. This event stopped the Assyrian army from moving further.

Different faiths have found deep meaning in Isaiah's words.

Christians often look at his songs about a "Suffering Servant." They believe these words describe the life and death of Jesus. The Book of Mormon also quotes Isaiah many times. In Islam, Isaiah is recognized as a prophet in many sources. Muslim scholars have shared stories about his life and his work. Some traditions say he even prophesied about the coming of Muhammad.

Because he was such a significant figure, many stories exist about his end. The Bible does not say exactly how he died. However, the Talmud says he was a martyr under King Manasseh. This story says he was killed by being sawn in two. Muslim traditions also mention a similar story of martyrdom. Even though people disagree on many details, his impact is huge. His writings remain a central part of religious study today. He is remembered as a man who spoke for his people.
