It is also known by many other names. Some people call it Ecclesiasticus, which means "of the Church." Others call it The Wisdom of Jesus the Son of Sirach. This book is a Jewish literary work. It was first written in Biblical Hebrew. It is the longest wisdom book left from ancient times.

Some parts talk about money matters and social justice. Other sections discuss how to treat the poor or the oppressed. It even includes a rare praise for doctors and medical care. The book uses these ideas to help people understand their duties to God and others.

A man named Yeshua ben Eleazar ben Sira wrote the text.

He was a Jewish scribe during the Second Temple period. He likely wrote the book around 180 BCE. Ben Sira is very special to historians. He is the only writer from that era to sign his work. His grandson later translated the book into Koine Greek. This happened around 117 BCE in a place like Egypt. This translation helped the book reach many more people.

We can find many specific details in the text. The book mentions Simon the High Priest, who died in 196 BCE. This helps scholars know when the book was written. It was likely composed between 196 and 175 BCE. The Greek version is found in many ancient manuscripts called codices.

Some parts of the book are quite long. For instance, chapters 44 to 50 praise famous ancestors. These ancestors include figures like Enoch. The book even mentions many books that would later become part of the Hebrew Bible.

Different religious groups view this book in different ways today. It is part of the Old Testament for Catholic and Orthodox churches.

However, it is not in the Hebrew Bible used in Judaism. In Protestant traditions, it is often called part of the Apocrypha. This means it is a special text but not part of the main canon. Even with these differences, the book remains a huge piece of history. It shows us how people long ago thought about wisdom and life.
