Many people call it wisdom literature. This means it contains deep ideas about how to live. The book is known for asking very big questions about life. It looks at the things that make people wonder about the world. Some people find its ideas to be quite unusual or even controversial.

The main character is a person named Kohelet. The name Kohelet means someone who speaks to an assembly. Most people today think it means a teacher or a preacher.

Some thinkers have wondered why the name sounds feminine in Hebrew. One idea is that wisdom itself is seen as a female concept. Other people thought the author was just weak in his old age. This name helps frame the whole story of the book.

Kohelet shares his journey through life and his search for knowledge. He tells us about his plans and his many experiences. He often says that life feels like a vapor or breath. This means things can feel thin or even meaningless.

He notices that both wise and foolish people eventually face death. Because of this, he suggests we enjoy simple daily pleasures. Eating, drinking, and working are seen as gifts from God.

There is a lot of debate about who wrote this book. Rabbinic tradition says King Solomon wrote it in his old age. He was a king in Jerusalem and was very wise.

However, many modern scholars have different ideas. They look at certain words used in the text. These words suggest the book might be newer than King Solomon's time. Some think it was written between 450 BCE and 180 BCE.

The book has a special way of being put together. It uses a narrator to introduce Kohelet to the reader. This narrator praises his wisdom but also shows its limits.

The text might even have three different voices speaking. One voice is the wise teacher sharing his own life. Another voice is the king giving direct commands. The final voice is an epilogist who adds a concluding summary. This summary tells readers to respect God and follow His ways.
