Many people call it wisdom literature. This means it contains ideas about how to live well.

The book focuses on a person named Kohelet. This name means a teacher or someone who speaks to a group. Some say the name is feminine. One idea is that this is because wisdom is seen as female.

Some traditions say King Solomon wrote it when he was old. Other scholars look at the words used in the book. They think it might be newer than that.

Kohelet asks big questions about life. He says that life can feel meaningless or like a breath of vapor. He notes that both wise and foolish people eventually die. Because of this, he gives some advice. He says people should enjoy simple things. Eating, drinking, and doing good work are gifts from God. The book ends by saying people should respect God. It says to follow His rules. This is because God will judge every deed, good or bad.
