He was a scribe. A scribe is a person who writes things down. He wrote thirty chapters of advice for his son. This book is a type of wisdom literature. That means it is writing meant to teach good ways to live.

Amenemope tells his readers how to be happy. He says to be kind to the poor. He says to respect the elderly and widows. One big idea is to be a "silent man." This man stays calm and does not cause trouble. He does not demand his rights in a loud way. Amenemope says this man will receive a blessing from a god. He warns against being a "heated man." This man makes a nuisance of himself. He will face destruction.

Many scholars study this book today. They see how it is like the Book of Proverbs in the Bible. Some think the Egyptian book helped shape the Hebrew book. Most experts believe the Egyptian text came first. This is because the Egyptian writing is very old. It shows how people sought inner peace long ago.
