It is the third book of the Torah. It is also in the Old Testament. Many scholars believe it took a long time to write. It may have reached its final form between 538 and 332 BC.

Most of the book is God speaking to Moses. Moses then tells these words to the Israelites. This happens after they leave Egypt. They are at Mount Sinai.

God tells them how to use the Tabernacle. This was a holy tent. He gives rules to the priests, too. Aaron and his sons were the priests.

Many rules focus on rituals. A ritual is a special way to show respect. These rules help people stay clean. Some foods or illnesses make people unclean.

Being clean lets God live with the people. The book also has a Holiness Code. This part gives rules for being good to neighbors. It also tells people how to act at festivals. One special day is the Day of Atonement. On this day, the High Priest cleanses the holy place.
