It records the Maccabean Revolt against the Seleucid Empire. This period of history took place between 170 BC and 134 BC. The book also explains how the Hasmonean kingdom became independent. Many people find this story important because it shows how a group fought for its traditions. It is much more than just a list of dates and names.

The story begins with a Greek king named Antiochus IV Epiphanes. He made new laws that stopped Jewish people from practicing their faith. He even took sacred items from the Temple in Jerusalem. The king forbade things like the Sabbath and carrying holy books. He even built gymnasia where people could exercise in the nude. This was hard for Jewish men because it made it difficult to follow their customs. Some people even tried to act more Greek to fit in. This tension eventually led to a major rebellion.

A man named Mattathias started the revolt with his five sons. One of his sons was named Judas Maccabeus.

Some believe his name means "hammer" because he was strong in battle. The rebels became known as the Maccabees. They faced many successes and setbacks during their wars. In 164 BC, they won back the Temple in Jerusalem. They rededicated the Temple, which is the origin of the holiday Hanukkah. After Judas died, his brothers Jonathan and Simon took over leadership.

We do not know the name of the person who wrote this book.

Most scholars think the author lived in the new Hasmonean kingdom. He likely wrote the book in Hebrew originally. However, the version we have today is in a Greek language called Koine Greek. The author seems to have known the land of Judea very well. He also wrote in a special style that sounded like older holy writings. He wrote this before 63 BC because he did not know about the Roman conquest.

Different religious groups view this book in different ways today. For Catholic, Eastern Orthodox, and Oriental Orthodox churches, it is considered sacred scripture. This is why it is called a deuterocanonical book. However, the book is not in the Hebrew Bible or the Protestant Bible. Some Protestants use it as a helpful background story. It is a unique piece of history that links ancient wars to modern holidays. It helps us understand how beliefs can shape the history of a whole nation.
