The Septuagint is an ancient Greek translation of the Hebrew Bible.

Many people call it the Greek Old Testament. Its name comes from a Latin phrase meaning "the version of the seventy translators." This name is often shortened to LXX. It is one of the most important historical versions of these sacred texts. It helped spread Jewish ideas to the wider Greek-speaking world. The translation was a major step for the Jewish community in Egypt.

This translation work happened in several different stages.

Experts believe the first five books were translated first. These books are known as the Pentateuch. The rest of the books were likely translated later. The quality of the writing changes from book to book. Some parts are very literal word-for-word translations. Other parts are more like paraphrases or interpretations. This means the style can feel different depending on which book you read.

One famous story explains how the project began.

The Letter of Aristeas says King Ptolemy II Philadelphus requested the translation. He wanted the books for his library in Alexandria. The story claims seventy-two Hebrew scholars did the work. They were chosen as six men from each of the twelve tribes of Israel. Some scholars think this specific story might be a legend. However, the translation definitely served a real need for people in the Ptolemaic Kingdom.

Most historians place the start of this work in the 3rd century BC.

This was in the city of Alexandria, which was a huge center of learning. At that time, many Jews spoke Koine Greek instead of Hebrew. Very few people could read the original Hebrew texts. The Septuagint allowed them to study their faith in a language they understood. By 132 BC, the Greek text was mostly complete. Later, this Greek version helped create many other translations in languages like Latin and Coptic.

The Septuagint is a large collection of different books. It includes the law, history, poetry, and prophets. It also contains books called the Apocrypha.

These include books like Judith, Tobit, and Wisdom of Solomon. Different religious groups use these books in different ways today. For example, Catholic and Eastern Orthodox churches include most of them. Protestant churches often do not include them in their Bibles. This makes the Septuagint a very important link between different faith traditions.
