Philo was a leader in the Jewish community there. He was a Hellenistic Jewish philosopher. This means he lived in a world where Greek and Jewish ideas met. He wrote many books using the Greek language. He wrote about many things like politics and religion. His main goal was to connect Jewish beliefs with Greek philosophy. He especially liked the ideas of a thinker named Plato.

Philo used a special way to explain stories called allegory.

An allegory uses stories as symbols for deeper ideas. He did not always think Bible stories were just history. Instead, he thought they showed how humans experience life. For example, he said Adam represented the human mind. He believed Eve represented the human senses. He also thought Noah represented a state of peace. This method helped him explain difficult parts of his holy books. He wanted to show that Jewish truth and Greek thought could work together.

Philo came from a very wealthy and noble family.

His family had many important connections. His father or grandfather was a Roman citizen. His brother was named Alexander Lysimachus. Alexander was a very rich man in Alexandria. He was even the richest man in the whole Hellenistic world. Alexander gave gold and silver to the temple in Jerusalem. Philo also had two nephews named Tiberius and Marcus. His family had ties to many famous leaders and rulers.

We do not know exactly when Philo was born or died.

However, we can make a good guess. A professor thinks he was born between 15 and 10 BCE. We know he was an old man in the year 40 CE. This was when he helped lead a group to see the Roman emperor Caligula. The group went to talk about trouble between Jewish and Greek people. Philo helped represent the Jewish community during this time. He lived through a period of much tension in his city.

Philo also spent a lot of time studying the meaning of numbers.

He believed numbers had special roles in the world. He said the number one was the basis for all numbers. He thought the number two meant things were split apart. To Philo, the number three was the number of the body. He believed the number five represented the five senses. The number ten was a sign of perfection. These ideas helped him explain how the world and God worked together.
