He was born around the year 204 in Roman Egypt. Scholars believe he was likely a Greek man. He did not care much about his family history or where he was born. Instead, he focused on big ideas about how the world works. He is known as the founder of Neoplatonism. This is a way of thinking that influenced many people for centuries. His ideas reached into the Middle Ages and the Renaissance. Even people in different religions studied his deep thoughts.

Plotinus began his journey as a student when he was twenty-eight. He traveled to Alexandria to find a great teacher. He was not happy with most teachers he met there. Then, he found a man named Ammonius Saccas. Ammonius taught himself how to be a philosopher. Plotinus studied with him for eleven years. Later, at age thirty-eight, he wanted to learn about Persian and Indian ideas. He joined an army to travel toward Persia. The trip was very hard and he was left in a difficult place. Eventually, he made his way to Rome at age forty.

In Rome, Plotinus became a very important teacher. He had a large group of students. Some were men and some were women. One student was named Porphyry. Porphyry was very close to him and wrote his life story. Other students included a doctor named Eustochius. There were also students from the Roman Senate. Even women like Gemina and Amphiclea studied his work. Plotinus also met important people like the Emperor Gallienus. He lived a life that followed very high moral standards. He spent his final days in a quiet place in Campania.

Plotinus wrote many essays and notes over many years. He wrote them between the years 253 and 269. He could not fix his own writing because his eyesight was poor. His handwriting was also very messy and hard to read. Because of this, Porphyry had to edit and organize the notes. These writings are now called the Enneads. The name comes from the Greek word for a group of nine. These books explain his three main ideas. He spoke about the One, the Intellect, and the Soul. These ideas help explain how everything in the universe is connected.

His most important idea was called "the One." He believed the One is the source of everything. The One is perfect and has no divisions. It is like a bright light that gives life to everything else. Plotinus used the sun as an example of how this works. The sun sends out light, but the sun does not get smaller. This process is called emanation. Everything flows out from the One in stages. The first stage is the Intellect, or the Divine Mind. The next stage is the Soul. These ideas helped many different groups of people understand the world.
