Parmenides was a famous Greek philosopher from the city of Elea. He lived in a place called Magna Graecia in Southern Italy. He was born into a wealthy and high-ranking family. Some ancient writers say he even helped lead his city by making laws.

His life is a bit of a mystery to us today. We do not know his exact birth date for certain. One source suggests he was born around 540 BC. Another idea comes from the writer Plato. Plato wrote a story where Parmenides visited Athens at age 65. This meeting happened during the Panathenaic Games when Socrates was a young man.

Parmenides wrote a single famous poem about nature. We call this work "On Nature." It was written in a special style of verse. We only have small pieces of this poem left today. Even so, these pieces are very complete. They allow scholars to understand his big ideas quite well.

In this poem, he describes two different ways to see the world. The first is the way of "Aletheia," or truth. This view says that reality is one single thing. It says that change is not actually possible. To him, existence is timeless and stays the same.

The second way is called "Doxa," which means opinion. This describes the world as it appears to our senses. Parmenides thought our eyes and ears could be deceitful. He believed our senses lead us to ideas that are not true. This idea was very different from how we usually see things. It suggests that what we see might not be the real truth.

Parmenides started a group of thinkers called the Eleatic school. He founded this school in his home city of Elea. His close friend Zeno of Elea was also a member. Zeno created famous puzzles called paradoxes to defend Parmenides's ideas. Another thinker named Melissus of Samos also followed these views.

Some people think Parmenides studied under Xenophanes. Others say he learned from Anaximander or a man named Aminias. These different stories show how much people wondered about his early life.

Parmenides had a huge impact on the history of thought. He is often called the founder of ontology. Ontology is the study of what it means to exist. His work deeply influenced the famous philosopher Plato. Many thinkers after him, like Empedocles and Anaxagoras, reacted to his ideas. Even today, people use his work to debate the philosophy of time. His ideas helped split the history of early Greek thought into two parts.
