Parmenides of Elea was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher. He lived in the Greek colony of Elea. This was located in Magna Graecia, which is Southern Italy. He was born into a wealthy and aristocratic family.

Some ancient sources say he even helped govern his city. They claim he helped organize it and created admirable laws. Parmenides is a central figure in the history of Western thought. He is often called the founder of ontology. Ontology is the branch of philosophy that studies the nature of being and existence.

We do not know the exact date Parmenides was born. Scholars use different ancient sources to guess his timeline. One source from Diogenes Laërtius suggests he flourished before 500 BC. This would place his birth around 540 BC. Another idea comes from the philosopher Plato. Plato wrote a dialogue where Parmenides visited Athens at age 65. This happened during the Panathenaic Games. At this meeting, Parmenides met a very young Socrates.

If Plato's timeline is correct, Parmenides might have been born around 515 BC. Other scholars use the founding of Elea to set different dates. This shows how difficult it is to reconstruct ancient lives.

Parmenides's only known work is a philosophical poem. It was written in dactylic hexameter verse. The original title is lost, so we call it "On Nature."

Although we only have fragments, they are very complete. This completeness allows classicists to reconstruct his doctrines with great precision. The poem presents two distinct ways of understanding reality. These two ways are the way of "Aletheia" and the way of "Doxa." Each path offers a different perspective on the world.

The first path is the way of "Aletheia," or truth. This view describes how all reality is actually one single thing. According to this doctrine, change is impossible. Existence is viewed as timeless and uniform.

This means that the movement we see is not the true reality. The second path is the way of "Doxa," or opinion. This path describes the world of appearances. It explains the world we experience through our senses. Parmenides argued that our sensory faculties can be false and deceitful.

Parmenides founded the Eleatic school of philosophy. This school was based in his home city of Elea. His ideas influenced several other important thinkers. Zeno of Elea was a close friend and a member of this school. Zeno developed famous paradoxes of motion to defend Parmenides's views. Melissus of Samos was another follower of these ideas.

There are different stories about who taught Parmenides. Some say he studied under Xenophanes. Others believe he was a disciple of Anaximander. A third tradition says he was associated with a Pythagorean named Aminias.

The influence of Parmenides is immense. His work helped split the history of pre-Socratic philosophy into two parts. Many later philosophers had to react to his ideas. For example, Empedocles and Anaxagoras frequently referred to him. The Atomist doctrines were also seen as reactions to the Eleatic views. Some scholars debate his relationship with Heraclitus of Ephesus. Some think Parmenides was attacking Heraclitus's ideas. Others believe Heraclitus might have actually come after Parmenides. Regardless, Parmenides's thought remains a major turning point in history.

Today, the work of Parmenides is still very relevant. Philosophers still use his ideas to debate the philosophy of time. His focus on the nature of existence changed how people think about the universe. By separating truth from appearance, he set the stage for much of Western logic. He forced thinkers to question whether the world they see is the real world. This question continues to drive scientific and philosophical discovery in the modern age.
