Heraclitus came from a wealthy and important family. Some stories say he gave up a royal title to his younger brother. He was a very influential person in Western philosophy. Many great thinkers studied his ideas later on.

Heraclitus had very big ideas about how the world works. He believed that everything is always changing. He called this constant change "flux."

He famously said that "everything flows." He also said that no man ever steps in the same river twice. This is because the water is always moving.

He believed fire was the most important thing in the world. He also thought a concept called the "logos" gave the world its structure.

We do not know a great deal about his life. Most of what we know comes from a writer named Diogenes Laërtius. Heraclitus wrote only one book, which was likely called "On Nature."

Most of this book is lost to time. Today, we only have small pieces called fragments. These fragments were found in the writings of other authors. Some people say he was a very lonely and sad man. Because of this, they called him "the weeping philosopher."

Heraclitus lived during the 6th century BC.

His time in Ephesus was near the end of the sixth century. He lived during a time of big changes in the region. During this era, the Persian Empire was very strong. He was a contemporary of other famous thinkers like Pythagoras. His ideas were very different from a thinker named Parmenides. Parmenides believed the world stayed the same, while Heraclitus saw change everywhere.

His writing style was very unique and difficult.

People called him "the dark" or "the obscure." This was because his words often had many meanings. He used wordplay to make people think deeply. Some thought he wrote this way on purpose. He wanted only the most capable people to understand him. Even today, his ideas about change still matter to many people. They help us think about how the world is always moving.
