He lived in a place called Miletus in Anatolia. This area is known as modern-day Turkey today. He was the last of the three Milesian philosophers. The other two famous thinkers were Thales and Anaximander. Historians call these three men the first philosophers of the Western world.

Little is known about his actual life. All of his original books are lost to time. We only know his ideas because later writers wrote about him. This includes thinkers like Aristotle and Theophrastus.

Anaximenes had a very specific idea about how the world works. He believed that air was the arche. The arche is the basic element that makes up everything. He thought air could change into different forms through two ways. One way is called condensation, which makes air thicker. This process creates wind, clouds, water, earth, and even stone. The other way is called rarefaction, which makes air thinner. This process turns the air into fire.

He also had many ideas about the stars and the Earth. Anaximenes believed the Earth was a flat disc. He thought the air underneath it helped it float. He believed the Sun and stars were also flat. These objects floated alongside the Earth. He said the Sun moved around the Earth. He thought the Sun was made of Earth rather than air. He even tried to explain why rainbows happen. He said they were sunlight reflecting off of clouds.

We can learn about his history through ancient records. Some say he was the son of a man named Eurystratus. He was likely a student of Anaximander. Anaximander taught him about the idea of a starting point for all things. Diogenes Laertius says Anaximenes lived from about 585 to 524 BC. He may have been a wealthy man. This wealth might have given him time to study. He likely studied Greek myths and epics as well.

His work was very important for the future of science. He was one of the first people to use natural science to explain the world. He did not use gods to explain how things changed. Instead, he looked for physical reasons for change. He influenced many other famous thinkers like Heraclitus and Anaxagoras. He also helped create an early way of scientific writing. Even though he is less famous now, his ideas helped start a new way of thinking.
