Because of his father, Origen grew up learning about philosophy and faith. This early training helped him become a great leader in his community.

Origen lived a very simple and quiet life. He chose to live as an ascetic, which means he avoided luxury.

He often went barefoot and owned only one cloak. He ate very little food and did not drink alcohol. He spent his daylight hours teaching many different students. At night, he stayed up late to write his many books.

This hard work helped him produce a huge amount of writing.

His life was not always easy or peaceful. In the year 202, the Emperor Septimius Severus made laws against Christians. Origen's father was arrested and killed during this time. This left Origen to take care of his large family. He became a teacher at age eighteen to help them.

He also wrote about the Trinity and how people might find salvation. His work was used by many important teachers in the east.

Even though Origen was brilliant, people often disagreed about his ideas.

Some people thought his ideas were wrong or strange. In the year 543, Emperor Justinian I ordered his books to be burned. This happened because the Emperor did not agree with his teachings. However, Origen is still remembered as a great genius of the early church. Many scholars still study his many ideas today.
