It is the only Roman novel written in Latin that has survived in its entirety. The story follows a man named Lucius. Lucius is a Greek man with many ancestors. He is very curious about magic and the marvelous things in life. This curiosity leads him into a very big adventure. His journey is both a physical trip and a way to change his soul.

The story works by following Lucius through many strange events. He tries to use a magic spell to turn into a bird. However, the spell fails and turns him into an ass instead. An ass is a type of donkey. As an animal, Lucius travels to many different places. He is sold to many different owners along the way. He works at a baker's mill and even works for a cook.

He hears many stories from the people he meets during his travels.

Scholars are not exactly sure when this book was written. Some think it was written early in the career of the author, Apuleius. Others believe it was written much later, perhaps in the 170s or 180s. Apuleius adapted this story from a Greek book. That original book was written by a man named Lucius of Patrae. We do not know that author's name very well. The Greek version of the story is now lost to us.

There are many interesting facts about how this book reached us. About 40 manuscripts of the story still exist today. Most of these come from one specific source called codex Laurentianus 68.2. This manuscript was made in Monte Cassino during the 11th century. The text sometimes uses unusual spellings. For example, the letters 'b' and 'v' are often swapped.

One of the most famous parts of the book is a story within the story. While Lucius is in a cave, a woman tells the tale of Cupid and Psyche.

Psyche et LAmour

This story is about a beautiful woman and the son of Venus. This way of telling stories is like how we watch movies today. A main story can have smaller stories inside of it. Lucius finally finds peace when the goddess Isis helps him. He becomes a human again during a festival called the Navigium Isidis.
