He lived in Alexandria, Egypt. This city was part of the Roman Empire. Philo came from a very wealthy family. His brother, Alexander, was a very rich man. Alexander even gave gold to a temple in Jerusalem.

Philo wrote many books in Greek. He liked to mix different ideas together. He combined Jewish beliefs with Greek philosophy. He used a way called allegory to explain stories. This means he saw stories as symbols. For example, he thought Adam represented the mind. He thought Eve represented the senses.

Philo also studied the meaning of numbers. He believed numbers had special roles. He said the number one was for God. He thought ten was a sign of perfection. Some people say he was a leader for his people. He spoke for Jewish people to the Roman ruler, Caligula. This happened after there was trouble in the city. Philo helped them talk to the leader about their problems.
