They lived a long time ago in a place called the Levant. Their name might mean "set apart." This could mean they stayed separate from other groups.

Pharisees had many special ideas. They followed the laws of Moses very closely. They also believed in an Oral Torah. This was a set of spoken rules. These rules helped explain how to live. They often disagreed with a group called the Sadducees. The Sadducees were often rich and powerful. They only followed the written laws. The Pharisees were very popular with common people. A writer named Josephus said they had 6,000 followers.

In the year 70 AD, the Second Temple was destroyed. This changed things for Jewish life. The ideas of the Pharisees became the base for Rabbinic Judaism. This is the main form of Judaism today. They wrote down their traditions in a book called the Mishnah. This helped their ways of thinking survive for a long time.
