Rabbinic Judaism is a way of life for many Jewish people. It grew from many different groups in the land of Israel.

This way of life became very important after the Second Temple was destroyed. Before that, worship centered on a large temple. After it was gone, people turned to prayer. They also looked to rabbis for leadership. Rabbis are teachers who lead small groups.

Followers believe in two parts of the law. One part is the Written Torah. The other part is the Oral Torah. They believe Moses received both from God at Mount Sinai. The Oral Torah helps explain the written part. At first, people did not write the oral laws down. They kept them in their memory. Later, they wrote them down to keep them safe.

These written laws are found in books like the Mishnah. They are also in the Talmud. The Talmud is a big collection of laws and ideas. There are two main versions of the Talmud. One is the Jerusalem Talmud. The other is the Babylonian Talmud.
