The Old Testament is the first major section of the Christian Bible.

It is a large collection of many different books. Most of these writings come from the Hebrew Bible, which is also called the Tanakh. These ancient writings were mostly written in Hebrew. Some parts were also written in Aramaic. Many different authors wrote these books over hundreds of years. Because it is so old, it is a very important part of religious history.

Christians often divide these books into four main groups. The first group is called the Pentateuch. This includes the first five books of the collection. The second group consists of history books. These tell the story of the Israelites from their conquest of Canaan to their time in Babylon. The third group contains poetry and wisdom literature. These books explore human life and ideas about justice. The fourth group is made of books from the prophets. These writers gave warnings to the people about their actions.

Different Christian groups do not all use the same number of books. A Protestant Bible typically has 39 books in this section. The Catholic Bible contains 46 books. Some Eastern Orthodox and Oriental Orthodox Churches include up to 49 books. Some books are found in Catholic and Orthodox Bibles but not in the Hebrew Tanakh. These are called deuterocanonical books. They often come from the Septuagint, which was an ancient Greek translation. Some Protestant versions call these books the Apocrypha.

History and science help people study these ancient texts today. Scholars use archaeology to look at things found in the ground. They want to see if the stories match real events from the past. There are big debates about the timing of certain stories. Some people study the Patriarchs or the Exodus. Others look at the United Monarchy or the conquest of the land. Some scholars are called "maximalists" because they accept the text as history. Other scholars are called "minimalists" because they are more skeptical.

Learning about the Old Testament helps us see how ideas change over time. It shows how different groups of people use the same stories in different ways. Even when people disagree on the details, the books remain very influential. For example, the order of the books can change depending on the tradition. The Talmud is a Jewish commentary that lists books in a different order. Many modern translations now use standardized names to help different groups communicate. This helps people from many backgrounds study the same ideas together.
