It is a large collection of many books. Different people wrote these books over many centuries. Most of these writings come from the Hebrew Bible, also called the Tanakh. This collection includes ancient Hebrew and Aramaic writings.

Many Christians group these books into four main parts. The first part is the Pentateuch. This includes the first five books. Next are the history books. These tell the story of the Israelites. The third part is poetry and wisdom books. These books look at life and right or wrong. The last part contains books from prophets. These prophets gave warnings to the people.

Different Christian groups use different books. A Protestant Bible usually has 39 books. A Catholic Bible has 46 books. Some Orthodox Bibles have up to 49 books. Some books are only in certain Bibles. These are sometimes called deuterocanonical books.

Scholars study these books to learn about the past. They look at things found in the ground. This is called archaeology. They use these finds to check the old stories. Some stories match what they find. Other stories are still being debated.
