Many people call this collection the Tanakh. This name comes from its three main parts. The first part is the Torah, or the Law. It includes the five books of Moses. The second part is the Nevi'im, which are the books of the Prophets. The third part is the Ketuvim, or the Writings.

These writings include many types of books. Some are stories about the past. Others are songs or poems, like the Book of Psalms. Some books share wisdom, while others share visions from prophets.

One main idea in these books is monotheism. This means believing in only one God. The books tell how the Israelites had a special bond with God. This bond is called a covenant. The stories describe how God helped the people. For example, the books tell how God led them out of Egypt. They also tell how God gave them laws to follow. These laws taught people to be fair and kind to others. They teach people to care for those who are in need.
